Sparring is a great way for the taekwondo student to execute the moves they have been practicing in their forms (poomsae), and applying lessons and drills they have been learning in their class. However, it is also the most dangerous and the most likely situation where the student can get hurt.

Of course, if your sparring in your school, it will probably be a bit more relaxed unless they are trying to get you ready for a tournament. As far as the competition itself is concerned, each match is comprised of three rounds lasting two minutes each, with one minute breaks between each round.

There are two types of sparring in Taekwon-Do. Step sparring and Free Sparring. Step Sparring (3, 2 and 1 Step) is a formal system of training that is laid out in three stages. It was developed specifically to prepare students for real life self-defence scenarios.

The Cardinal Taekwondo RSO sent three students to compete at the Colorado State Championship for Taekwondo. The competition was held in Monument, Colorado, on March 9.
